DCC Stories of Hope: Alex and our crisis support service

Listen to Alex’s powerful story of finding hope through Distress Centre Calgary.

Calling Distress Centre Calgary and being able to interact with the amazing and caring people in my lowest moments had had an indescribable impact.

At first, I was reluctant to call but eventually, I felt that there was nothing to lose. During those calls, I could express my struggles and be met with compassion, patience and dignity. I kept calling because I realized I didn’t have to face my challenges alone.

Sometimes I even called just for a 10 mins ‘chat’ but it was enough to help me pull myself out of bed, eat, shower, or go to bed. I’ve called many times over the years, sometimes very late at night, sometimes multiple times a day and sometimes for very long. Thank you for every call, for connecting me to local services, for following up, and for encouraging me when I couldn’t see the way forward. Distress Centre made a difference in my life when I needed it most.

Hope and healing amidst life’s challenges

I was able to return to work. I now have a job in my field that I love. I can take care of myself. My home and my hobbies are back a little more each day. I can enjoy the company of friends and family around me. My actions are no longer a cycle of impulsiveness and self-destruction. I’ve regained the ability to take control of my life.

These days, I call less and less. I no longer let my struggles rob me from living my life. I will often give out the phone number though. I feel that people politely take it with the same skepticism that I once had. I’m not bothered since one day they may call and find what I found. Thank you so much. I can’t express how much of a difference it’s made for me. There are so many available resources out there but this one is so accessible which is incredibly important.

“Overcoming my recent mental health battles is my life’s greatest achievement. I struggled a lot and for a long time, but I didn’t struggle in isolation because I had Distress Centre.”

Grateful for the support they received, Alex became a monthly donor, helping ensure others can find the same care when they need it most.
