DCC Stories of Hope: Maria and our crisis line

Photo of a person with their back turned and text: "This is Maria*. In her darkest moment, she found solace on the other end of Distress Centre’s Crisis Line." Distress Centre Calgary's brand mark is at the bottom with the hashtag #DCCStories

Maria*, a concerned mother, called Distress Centre’s crisis line, her voice trembling with fear. Her 7-year-old son had experienced trauma, leaving her family feeling lost. As a result, she was desperate for mental health support and guidance on how to help her son. However, she didn’t know where to turn.

Resources of hope

As Maria shared her story through tears, the responder listened empathetically. Then, the responder quickly gathered resources. They told her about the Mobile Response Team—a service Maria didn’t know existed. Next, the responder explained how the team could provide real-time support, giving Maria hope.

With newfound clarity and a sense of direction, Maria gratefully accepted the support of the Mobile Response Team. Afterward, the responder guided her through the process, ensuring a smooth transition.

By the end of the call, Maria felt relieved and supported, knowing help was on the way. In a moment of despair, Distress Centre provided comfort, guidance, and a path toward healing for her family.
